Authorities called upon residents leaving the area to be hit by hurricane.
The National Center for American Hurricanes warned the residents of a coastal region of the state of Texas that they must leave the area this Friday, leaving the route of Hurricane Ike to avoid "certain death".
The warning was given to the residents of Galveston Bay and affects more than one million people. The hurricane Ike should arrive in the area the night of Friday.
"All districts and possibly entire coastal communities, will be flooded during the peak of the storm. Those who do not follow orders to evacuate homes in one or two floors will be subject to certain death," said the release of the institution.
Meteorologistas say that coastal areas may be affected by waves of up to 15 meters.
Federal Emergency
The alert was issued after strong indications that some residents in the Bay of Galveston were resisting orders to evacuate.
The government Texan has over a thousand buses to facilitate the process in the region. In Galveston only, 75 buses are carrying residents to the state capital, Austin.
People and most vulnerable patients are being transported to the city of San Antonio.
After Galveston, the hurricane should be forwarded to Houston, the fourth largest U.S. city.
The American president, George W. Bush, said the area of the State of Texas as federal emergency, allowing funds can be released to deal with the storm.
Estrago the Caribbean
Ike already killed over 70 people in the Caribbean. Haiti, with 66 dead, and Cuba, with 4, were the places most affected.
The hurricane was the third major storm to hit the tropical Haiti, the poorest country of the continent, in just three weeks. Around 550 people were killed.
The UN has appealed for about U.S. $ 100 million to help the Haitians.
The U.S. pledged $ 10 million to the country. The UN estimates that some 800 thousand people are living in temporary shelters.
The U.S. government also offered U.S. $ 100 thousand to Cuba, but the Cuban government refused to help, asking instead to the United States to sell the supplies crédito.mc.sp2008
